Art Courses

IMG_6339.jpeg

Is this about mindfulness or wellbeing?

While the courses are not therapy-based, they are intentionally calm and unhurried. Many participants find that focusing on drawing and making helps them slow down, concentrate, and enjoy being absorbed in the act of learning.

What mediums will we use?

Depending on the course, we work with a range of materials including drawing media, mixed media processes, and sketchbook-based approaches.  A range of art materials are provided, and participants are also very welcome to bring their own materials if they prefer to work with familiar tools.

Where do the courses take place?
Courses are held at Urban Clay in Aylsham — a welcoming pottery studio that values community, and shared learning. The space supports focused work while remaining relaxed and informal with an excellent menu of hot drinks and sweet treats!

What experience do you bring as a teacher?
I have over ten years’ experience teaching art in a range of settings, including schools, private one-to-one tutoring, and running an art club. Alongside my own illustration and textile practice,  has shaped a teaching approach that is clear, supportive, and focused on building confidence.

What can I expect to gain from the course?
Participants often leave with increased confidence, new skills, a deeper understanding of the process, and a renewed enjoyment of making. Hopefully you will make some new friends too!

Art Courses:

Rachel answers your questions...

What are the art courses about?
The courses are designed as calm, supportive spaces for adults to explore drawing and making. They focus on process, observation, and developing confidence, rather than producing finished or polished outcomes.

Who are the courses for?
They are suitable for complete novices, adults who are returning to art after time away, those looking to develop a new skill, or anyone wanting a regular creative practice alongside work or family life.

No previous experience is required.

What is your teaching approach?

My teaching style is friendly, relaxed, and supportive, with a focus on enjoying the creative process rather than chasing perfection. I aim to remove pressure and help people feel comfortable exploring, experimenting, and trusting their instincts. Sessions are fun, encouraging, and gently guided, with illustrated handouts, group discussion, and plenty of time to work at your own pace, with support whenever you need it.

NEW to 2026.  Sketchbook Confidence

A 6-week course.

Sketchbook Confidence is a gentle, six-week course designed to help you rediscover your creativity and build confidence in your sketchbook.

It’s about loosening up, letting go of perfection, and enjoying drawing again — whether you’re returning to art after a break or starting something new.

Each session lasts two hours and introduces fundamental elements of drawing and art. Over the course, we will explore loosening up, contour drawing, colour, mark-making, and composition.

The final session culminates in 'The Big Draw' — a large still life drawing session that brings together everything you’ve learned.

The course takes place at Urban Clay, a warm and welcoming pottery studio in Aylsham.
We meet every Wednesday from 10am–12pm, starting 25 February and finishing 15 April, with a short break over Easter.

Sketchbook and all materials are provided,  you’re very welcome to bring your own favourite tools if you’d like. The course is suitable for beginners and those returning to drawing — no previous experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

This is a small, friendly group course, offering time, space, and encouragement to reconnect with your creativity and build confidence in your sketchbook.

Group sizes are kept small, so early booking is advised.
