A Place of Protection
Nestled amongst wild grasses and poppies, two young leverets rest together, one sitting watchfully above the other as if keeping guard.
Inspired by the hidden lives of young hares, A Place of Protection captures a quiet moment of closeness and shelter in the wild. Created using hand painting, vintage and repurposed fabrics and free-motion embroidery, layers of fabric are carefully cut and stitched to build texture, pattern and character.
The artwork is created on a beautiful piece of vintage linen fabric dating from 1917, giving the piece a little history of its own. Beginning with my original drawing, I build the image using carefully chosen pieces of vintage and repurposed fabric. Individual fabrics are layered, stitched and cut away to create the leveret's markings and form, while free-motion embroidery, hand-painted details and tiny pieces of fabric create the surrounding grasses and wildflowers.
The result is a richly textured, one-of-a-kind piece with tiny details to discover up close.
Framing & presentation
The original textile artwork is professionally mounted and presented in a slim natural wood frame, which I hand-finish in my Norfolk studio using Briwax to enhance the grain and give each frame a warm, individual character. The reverse is finished with recyclable paper framing tape and the artwork is supplied with a signed and embossed Certificate of Authenticity.
