'Field Notes' Original Framed Textile Artwork
Field Notes
Hidden amongst the fading grasses and seed heads, a tiny harvest mouse pauses for a moment.
Field Notes is an original textile artwork inspired by the changing Norfolk countryside at the end of summer.
Created using layers of carefully chosen and repurposed fabrics, the mouse and surrounding grasses are built up with free-motion embroidery, painted fabrice machine and hand stitching, allowing the drawn quality of the thread to remain visible.
A restrained palette of warm ochres, soft browns and muted greens captures the dry grasses of early autumn, while tiny touches of pink bring the harvest mouse quietly to life.
Each element has been individually cut, layered and stitched, making Field Notes a completely unique, one-of-a-kind piece.
The artwork is created on a beautiful piece of vintage linen fabric dating from 1917, giving the piece a little history of its own. Beginning with my original drawing, I build the image using carefully chosen pieces of vintage and repurposed fabric. Individual fabrics are layered, stitched and cut away to create markings and form, while free-motion embroidery, hand-painted details and tiny pieces of fabric create the surrounding grasses.
The result is a richly textured, one-of-a-kind piece with tiny details to discover up close.
Framing & presentation
The original textile artwork is professionally mounted and presented in a slim natural wood frame, which I hand-finish in my Norfolk studio using Briwax to enhance the grain and give each frame a warm, individual character. The reverse is finished with recyclable paper framing tape. The artwork is supplied with a signed and embossed Certificate of Authenticity.
Part of my Beyond the Barn Door collection, celebrating the animals, plants and small hidden moments of rural life.
