Where the Leveret Hides

An original textile artwork inspired by the quiet beauty of the countryside and those fleeting moments when you catch sight of something hiding amongst the grasses.

A young hare, or leveret, nestles low amongst wild grasses, seedheads and flashes of soft pink flowers, quietly peeping out from her hiding place.

The artwork is created on a beautiful piece of vintage linen fabric dating from 1917, giving the piece a little history of its own. Beginning with my original drawing, I build the image using carefully chosen pieces of vintage and repurposed fabric. Individual fabrics are layered, stitched and cut away to create the leveret's markings and form, while free-motion embroidery, hand-painted details and tiny pieces of fabric create the surrounding grasses and wildflowers.

The result is a richly textured, one-of-a-kind piece with tiny details to discover up close.

The finished textile artwork is padded and carefully tension-stretched over mountboard using traditional techniques, before being presented in a professionally cut mount.

Part of my Beyond the Barn Door collection, celebrating the animals, plants and small hidden moments of rural life.
